Questions & Answers

I have a floor height difference between rooms of circa 11mm and I am looking to lay laminate throughout. Can I lay double thickness of these boards to resolve this height difference?

Asked by Graeme Baines from Rutland on 27 Jul 2018

1 Answer

Hi Graeme, I'm afraid that's not what these boards are designed for. Your best bet would be to have a professional level the floor with screed, or use a ramp trim to bridge the gap between the different heights.

I live in a bungalow which has really cold timber floors, to prevent draughts and provide insulation I'm proposing the following makeup: Timber floor membrane fibreboard with taped joints traditional underlay carpet Is this feasible?

Asked by David Robertson from Glasgow on 20 Mar 2018

1 Answer

Hi David, we can't think of any reason why this shouldn't be possible!

We have an open plan living area into kitchen and we're going to put the Quickstep Impressive laminate across the whole lot. The living area is on suspended wooden floorboards and the kitchen has new concrete scree with underfloor heating. Should we put fibre board in the living area and a Quickstep underlay (unisound/silentwalk/thermolevel) in the kitchen, or would the height difference be a problem? We have been advised to layer both fibre board and Quickstep thermolevel throughout.

Asked by Kate Bridges from Bristol on 03 Mar 2018

1 Answer

Hi Kate, we'd recommend this underlay for both areas of your floor: https://www.flooringsupplies.co.uk/accessories/16117/quickstep_silent_walk_underlay

Please can you advise the tog value of these boards. We need a good level of insulation to go under laminate flooring, directly onto wooden floorboards in a room above a coal shed and a garage that are open to the elements. Thanks

Asked by Lucy Wright from Scotland on 06 Feb 2018

1 Answer

Hi Lucy, TOG values aren't used for flooring, however the official heat insulation of these boards is 0.050W/mK. This underlay is designed for use on very cold subfloors so sounds perfect for your situation.

I'm told by our Building Inspector that the underfloor insulation for our suspended wooden floor should achieve a U-value of 0.25 W/m2K or less. We are considering using the best insulation board/solution available as part of installing engineered wood flooring, so avoiding installing insulation below the floorboards - is this product meeting the required U-value? If not, can you recommend an alternative? Looking for good sound absorption too/ Regards, Alan

Asked by Alan Roach from Cardiff on 18 Nov 2017

1 Answer

Hi Alan, we're happy to say that this underlay has a U-Value of 0.050W/m2K

Does this product need an extension gap and how much? Also are the edges square so butt up nice and smoothly? How would you recommend joining the boards under vinyl (eg a special tape?)

Asked by Tracey France from Billingshurst on 11 Jul 2017

1 Answer

Hi Tracey, the boards simply butt up against each other, with no need for tape. Expansion gaps are only needed for permanent home fixtures such as walls and fire places.

Hi there, I am looking to put flooring down which will be continuous between my kitchen and extension. The floor of the kitchen is a suspended timber floor and the extension is a concrete slab. Would this fibre board underlay be suitable to work on both substrates? Thanks

Asked by Peter Virtue on 20 Mar 2017

1 Answer

Hi Peter, yes, this underlay will be fine for both substrates, you'll just need to make sure you use a DPM over the concrete subfloor to protect against rising moisture.

What is the thermal conductivity of this board?

Asked by Jean Susan Whitaker from CB25 0EY on 15 Feb 2017

1 Answer

Hi Jean, the thermal conductivity is rated at 0.050W/mK.

I'm trying to avoid ripping up kitchen tiles, Is this underlay suitable to used on top of the tiles and then laminate or lino over?

Asked by Nicola on 09 Feb 2017

1 Answer

Hi Nicola, as long as the surface is clean, flat and even, this should be fine

Hi, Is this underlay suitable for use under a laminate on a concrete floor on its own, or would I need a DPM as well?

Asked by Ian Hole on 28 Jan 2017

1 Answer

Hi Ian, this underlay would need a DPM if it's being used over a concrete subfloor.

Hi, is this underlay suitable to go under Carpet Tiles?

Asked by James Fiske on 10 Jan 2017

1 Answer

Hi James, I'm afraid not, this is for hard floors only.

Is this underlay compatible with engineered wood floors? Thanks

Asked by Jehan-zaib Aslam on 19 Dec 2016

1 Answer

Hi Jehan-zaib, This underlay is absolutely compatible with engineered flooring.

We are looking to use fibre board as underlay in a soon-to-be made accessible bungalow with concrete floors. My wife is a wheelchair user and cannot propel on standard underlays or on thick pile carpets. We are looking to increase thermal insulation property also. Is there an ideal board for use in bathrooms under carpet also? Bedrooms, bathroom, hall and lounge will be carpeted whilst kitchen and utility will have lino. Thanks.

Asked by Mick Phythian from York on 14 Nov 2016

1 Answer

Hi Mick, This underlay is designed to be used with laminate and wood floors, not carpet. Sadly, we don't offer carpet underlays, so you're best to go to a carpet specialist for that.

Your answer to Dilan (above) says there are actually 20 boards per pack. Your product information still states that there are 14. Which is it?

Asked by Kevin Cheeseman on 16 Aug 2016

1 Answer

Hi Kevin, Well spotted! This product has recently changed from 20 sheets to 14 sheets - we'll be sure to update our above answer to reflect the changes.

Can tiles be laid on top of this insulation?

Asked by Steve from Essex on 16 Apr 2016

1 Answer

Hi Steve It would depend what type of tiles. If you give us a call we will hopefully be able to help.

Hi, On this product you say that it is 7sqm per sheet, and you give dim of 5.5mm (t) x 590mm (w) x 850mm (l), how does these two go together exactly? For a room of 12sqm how many of these sheets do I need pleae?

Asked by Dilan Roshani from Nottingham on 25 Mar 2016

1 Answer

Hi Dilan, Well spotted, thank you! This product actually covers 10.03sqm (the specs have now been updated) with each pack, and each pack contains 14 sheets. For a 12sqm room you'll need 2 packs. Thank you for letting us know.

Hello is this underlay suitable for underfloor heating when used with laminate flooring?

Asked by Nita Lear from Sunderlanf on 20 Jan 2016

1 Answer

Hi Nita, This is a particularly thick underlay which is great for insulation. It also means it's not great for underfloor heating, because it'll block the heat. A felt underlay would allow a lot more heat to pass through.

is this underlay suitable for splash zones? thanks

Asked by rachel wilmot from redcar on 20 Jan 2016

1 Answer

Hi Rachel, I'm afraid that this underlay isn't waterproof, so it could cause you problems down the line. Instead, we'd recommend one of our underlays with a built-in DPM (Damp Proof Membrane) Thanks
