Underlay and Damp Proof Membranes

Why do I need underlay?
The primary function of underlay is to take up any unevenness in the floor. Also underlay must be present for any warranty to be valid in the event of a problem.

Can I use the carpet underlay already laid?
We do not advise the use of a carpet underlay, as this is not suitable for wooden flooring. The correct underlay must be used to comply with warranties etc.

Which way up do I lay underlay?
If your underlay has a built in moisture barrier this needs to be touching the sub floor, with the foam/spongy part of underlay facing upwards.

What's DPM?
DPM stands for Damp Proof Membrane. This is also known as a moisture barrier and can be supplied on its own or built in to an underlay. It is required to be laid if a concrete sub floor is present. Many manufacturers require this to be used for the warranty to stand.
