Sustainable forestry and the FSC
Does the wood come from sustainable forests?
The FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) governs and certifies sustainable forestry. It is an independant, non-profit making organisation that has the backing of the World Wide Fund for Nature, Greenpeace, Friends of The Earth and other globally active organisations. The FSC logo is a mark of excellence. Any wood product which is certified by the FSC has met the strictest of requirements. The wood used has been tracked and controlled by FSC inspectors all the way from the forest where it was grown to the factory where the end product was made.
The FSC takes three principles into account when granting a certificate of approval:
Environmental Awareness
That the forest is treated as part of a much larger environment, that clearance is prohibited, and that bio-logical diversity is preserved;
Social Responsibility
That the needs of indigenous peoples and local trade unions are taken into consideration, and that conditions of employment are just;
Economic Sustainability
That the forest is treated in a way that is economically sustainable for everyone concerned: the owners, forestry workers and the local business community.
