Durability

Durability means how long the flooring will realistically last. The star ratings are based on our experience and must not be used as a definitive guarantee (i.e. our opinion and the length of warranty provided by the different manufacturers across their product range).

  • 2.5 = 5-12 years
  • 3 = 10-15 years
  • 3.5 = 15-20 years
  • 4 = 20-75 years
  • 5 = 75 years plus
All floor covers will mark, dent and scuff over time. Please visit the individual manufacturer’s websites for full details, as our star rating is a general guide only. Below is a general overview, broken down into each product group.

Real wood - engineered

Engineered flooring with 3mm to 4mm will last on average a generation, maybe two generations with appropriate care and maintenance.

Thinner veneers will of course perform well, but will typically not last as long.

Real wood - solid

Solid flooring is the most durable flooring product available in the marketplace and will last for 100’s of years.

The truth in this comment can be proven in every stately home in the country.

LVT (Amtico / Karndean) – Luxury Vinyl Tiles

Luxury vinyl tiles like Amtico, Spacia and Karndean again have different quality ranges which reflect upon the durability.

Some will perform better than others, but as an overview the warranties give a very good indication on the life expectancy.

Laminate

Laminate flooring is harder than real wood in terms of the Brinell scale, but will not out-perform real wood on durability. Again, durability varies throughout the range of laminate flooring.

With this in mind we realistically predict a typical life span in the range of 5 to 20 years.

Carpet

Carpet is the hardest to quantify as they are all different.

No more than 5 to 10 years would be the typical life of a natural carpet.
