What is a floating floor?
No it’s not a levitating floor or a magic carpet if only; it’s actually a way in which a floor can be installed rather than just a specific type of floor.
As it suggests a floating floor is a flooring system that is not fixed to the sub-floor and is laid down over a layer of suitable underlay and the weight of the floor is what keeps the floor in position. A floating floor system, either solid, laminate or engineered, must be installed over a subfloor (ply, wood or concrete) which is dry, flat, even, and load-bearing.
Most floors can be installed using this method however; please check with the manufacturers recommendations regarding solid wood flooring as some solid wood floors cannot be floated.
Engineered floors that can be floated
Junckers
Junckers solid wood floors can be laid as a floating floor as described above. This is the only manufacturer of solid wood that you can install in this way. To ensure a quality performing floor, Junckers floors require shallow metal clips to be used to hold the rows of boards together, and glued at the end joints, whilst laid over an underlay.Junckers solid wood floors that can be floated
Peel and stick underlay
A semi floating method has been introduced by using an underlay called Peel and stick. It is for use with solid wood floors. The underlay is rolled out like any other, but has a high grab adhesive layer that your floor is stuck onto. The floor is stuck to the underlay but not stuck to the floor, so it is known as a semi floating floor.Solid floors that can be floated
