is there a type of real wood flooring (e.g. maple versus oak) that is more durable or longer lasting than another?

Like all organic materials, wood has its own character and there is not much difference between the durability of real wooden flooring types. All hard wood types like Oak, Beech,Walnut etc are very hard durable woods and will last for generations, as will Maple and Jatoba of course.

There are, however, minor differences in the density of the natural product which governs how it will mark with impact. Your choice will really come down to aesthetics. Bear in mind that any lacquer will provide a hardwearing surface that will protect the wood, to a degree, from marking.
